Living in southeastern Virginia, we don’t get much snow. A couple times a year we may get a 2-3 inches, but it’s rare to see much more than that…but we always look forward to it! This week, we got super lucky and had eight inches of snow fall! Aside from the obvious fun of sledding, snow angels, and hot cocoa, my kids look forward to making another special treat — maple snow candy.
This idea dates way back, and is even featured in the book Little House in the Big Woods when Laura and her family make this delicious recipe during one of their many snowfalls. It’s super simple, uses only three ingredients, and can be made in about 10 minutes or so.
Combine maple syrup and butter in a saucepan and boil until it reaches at least 235F (soft ball stage) or 250F (hard ball stage) for chewier candy. Next, simply pour the mixture of a pan of snow (or directly on the snow outside for even more fun!) and watch it harden up into a delicious, chewy maple taffy.
