Eating Gluten Free in New Orleans

I recently traveled to New Orleans for a work convention, and had a lot of fun exploring all of their delicious gluten free eating options! I’m intolerant to gluten, but I do not have celiac. I tend to do fine in minor cross-contamination situations but can’t do more than that. If you have celiac disease, I do suggest you contact the places I talk about here to be sure they are safe for you!

Magazine Pizza

This was my favorite, because, well, gluten free pizza. Pizza is life, is it not? This place was super cute inside, and the staff was very friendly. It was a little weird in that our food came out at separate times, but it was all worth the wait. They have so many delicious combos to choose from! We went with chicken and bacon, and it was heaven. The crust was thin as is typical for gluten free pizza, but it was tasty, and the sauce, cheese, and toppings were amazing. Before we left, they actually gave us an extra gluten free pizza they made by accident for free! WIN!

New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co

The choices here will vary by location, so definitely call before you go! They are all over the city though, so they are an easy place to stop and eat. Their fried green tomatoes are battered in corn, so they are gluten free. I had the shrimp remoulade salad and it really hit the spot! I work at a restaurant that isn’t gluten free, and drool over the fried green tomatoes on a daily basis, so this was a real treat. Their french fries have batter in them, so they are NOT safe, FYI. But they have some interesting choices you don’t necessarily get to have elsewhere, and free soft serve ice cream for dessert, which the kids loved. OK, the adults loved it too!

The Daily Beet

This cute healthy stop has a lot of great choices, with bowls, salads, and my choice — an acai bowl. They have a jug of filtered water to fill your water bottle with, and some yummy looking local kombucha and juices to choose from in the fridge! Kind and helpful staff and an adorable atmosphere and great vibe. I wish I’d been able to go a second time!

Cafe Du Monde

Just kidding. No beignets for me!! The only safe thing here is their coffee. Or water. Sad face.

Bittersweet Confections

I stumbled upon this cute bakery and sweet shoppe walking around the city. I got an OMG yummy chocolate mousse cup that was also stunningly beautiful…I don’t think my photography does it justice. I was happy to see they had gluten free banana nut muffins in their case, but opted for chocolate instead.

Deanie’s Seafood

Imagine my surprise when I found out this popular and nice restaurant had gluten free fried seafood! I was so excited to get to eat something like that that I didn’t have to prepare myself. Before our meal was served, the waiter brought over a dish of what I assumed was going to be the typical rolls I can never have…but they were seasoned and boiled potatoes! What a treat! We ordered a seafood combo plate (which was big enough for 3 of us to share, mind you.) The shrimp, oysters, and catfish were all safe for me to eat, and it was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend stopping in here!

Pulp & Grind

I came across this little healthy coffee shop before catching my flight. I figured I’d end up just getting coffee, but it turned out they had some nice options, and an incredible selection of freshly pressed juices. I wound up skipping coffee and going healthy with a YUMMY green juice and their Power 5 muffin, which were their only gluten free option that day. It was a great snack on my plane ride out of New Orleans.

I had a great time in New Orleans, and really enjoyed scoping out all the awesome gluten free food! Have fun in the city and don’t worry about feeling deprived, there are lots of choices for you to eat.
